Overview of Skills Taught in Essentials 1-7

  • Phonemic Awareness

    The ten Pre-Lessons practice blending and segmenting from an auditory prompt. Students continue to build their phonemic awareness in the Exploring Sounds section of each lesson.

  • Systematic Phonics

    Students will fill in knowledge gaps about the sounds of A-Z and learn an additional 18 multi-letter phonograms and 13 spelling rules.

  • Spelling

    Phonemic awareness skills and phonics skils are applied in Spelling Analysis. Each Unit includes three levels, A, B, and C, to differentiate instruction. All levels are controlled for phonics concepts that have been taught. Each Unit also includes an activity to create a student Spelling Journal.

  • Grammar

    In Units 1-7 students learn about nouns, adjectives, plurals, articles, conjunctions, and commas in a series. Each of these skills strengthens reading comprehension and composition skills.

  • Vocabulary

    Vocabulary includes differentiated instruction for Levels A, B, and C. Level A includes compound words and the suffixes -er and -est. Level B students learn additional morphemes such as -less and quart. Level C students are introduced to 41 morphemes.

  • Optional Comprehension & Composition

    Beginning with Quips and progressing through fiction and nonfiction articles, the Essentials Reader builds student confidence. Graphic organizers, key word and note taking activities model skills that foster academic success.
